Episode 74: We Need to Talk About Erin (featuring David Fleming)

In his introduction to this episode, Matthew muses about what a wonderful time it is to be a Marx Brothers fan — a sentiment I’ve heard expressed often around these parts, and how true it is. We think you’re going to want to take a quick break from reading the Zeppo book, just an hour and a half, to meet our guest David Fleming. You might not have heard of David until now, but surely you’ve heard of his aunt.

Erin Fleming was Groucho Marx’s secretary, manager, and companion during the final six years of his life, and one of the more controversial and ire-inspiring characters in the entire Marx Brothers saga. There have been sensitive and balanced depictions of Erin in important books by Hector Arce and Steve Stoliar, but until now, we haven’t heard from a member of Erin’s family.

With candor and insight, David provides valuable context for the story of Groucho and Erin, as well as specific memories of the times he spent with them.

The world will never run out of new Groucho Marx stories. Thanks for your support in making this the podcast where people come to tell ‘em!

Recording MBCP Episode 74, October 2024

Official description: “David Fleming, Erin’s nephew, offers raw and compelling insight into the complex life of Groucho’s ‘secretary.’

“He recounts visits to his aunt at Groucho’s home and encounters with the man himself. We are treated to contemporary letters from Erin, describing life at the Marx house, her relationship with Groucho, and her later descent into madness. He shares firsthand memories of Erin’s battle with mental illness in explicit detail, and explains why it was predictable.

“David also speculates on why Groucho was drawn to her.

“A sympathetic yet unfettered exploration of a tragic story that you won’t find anywhere else.”

Note: This episode contains adult language and content.

Note for early birds:  When a new episode is released, it might not appear at all of the locations below right away. If you visit your favorite podcast provider and the previous episode is still the most recent one you see there, be patient! And above all, don't worry.
